# Swept vs Monitaur

Both are built for carriers, and they govern different things. Monitaur is a system of record for the models you build and buy. Swept is where your people and agents use AI every day, with policyholder data kept inside your walls.

## The short answer

- **Monitaur:** Choose it if your main gap is model risk: documenting, validating and monitoring pricing, underwriting and claims models for examiners.
- **Swept:** Choose it if your people are already using Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot and you need them on approved tools, with data controls, spend limits and a full audit trail.
- **Use both:** If you run your own rating and claims models and also have staff using AI day to day. Monitaur goes deep on model risk and validation, and Swept inventories and governs the AI your people and agents use.

## Where each one sits

A carrier's AI shows up in four places. Swept covers the three where people and agents touch policyholder data. Monitaur covers the models behind your rating and claims decisions.

## Side by side

| Capability | Swept | Monitaur |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Keep your data safe** | | |
| Staff use Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, approved and in their native form | Built in: Through a private gateway | Not offered: Governs models; doesn't provide them [4] |
| Policyholder data stopped before it reaches a model | Built in: Checked on every request | Not stated: Not described in public materials |
| Alerts when vendor software ships new AI | Built in: Including features that arrive in an update | Partly: Third-party models can be registered and monitored [2] |
| **Unshackle the full power of AI** | | |
| Agents that work with your core systems, without rip and replace | Built in: Built and run for you | Not offered |
| **Control costs and optimize ROI** | | |
| Caps and budgets by person and team, metered live | Built in | Not stated |
| How you pay | On usage, not seats | Multi-year contract tiers, listed publicly [3] |
| **Governance and supervision** | | |
| Governance mapped to NAIC and state requirements | Built in | Built in: Guidance published on the NAIC evaluation tool [6] |
| Audit-ready log of every AI interaction | Built in: Plus board-ready reporting | Model decisions [3] |
| Live AI tracked and checked over time | Built in: Ongoing supervision | Built in [2] |
| **Avoid vendor lock-in** | | |
| Switch AI providers without rebuilding your rules | Built in: One set of guardrails across providers | Not applicable: Doesn't provide models |

## What each does well

### Monitaur

- Deep insurance focus, built around model filings, market conduct and NAIC expectations. [1]
- Governance across the whole model lifecycle, for every model type. [2]
- Publishes guidance for carriers on the NAIC AI evaluation tool pilot. [6]

### Swept

- The AI tools your people already want, in their native form, with policyholder data kept in.
- Agents that connect to your core systems, built and run for you.
- Pay for usage, not seats, with caps by person and team.

## Try one real task: an adjuster drafts a coverage letter from a claim file

**With Monitaur:** Monitaur isn't the tool the adjuster types into. If the drafting model is registered, Monitaur holds its documentation, validation and monitoring for review.

**With Swept:** The adjuster uses Claude or ChatGPT through Swept. Policy numbers and health details are caught before the request leaves your environment, and the draft is logged for review.

## Questions carriers ask

### Is Swept a replacement for Monitaur?

Usually not. Monitaur governs the models behind rating, underwriting and claims decisions. Swept governs how your people and agents use AI day to day. Carriers with a mature model risk program often run both.

### We only have a few models. Do we need model governance first?

Start where the exposure is. For many carriers that is staff pasting policyholder data into personal AI accounts, which a model inventory won't catch.

### Which one helps more with the NAIC Model Bulletin?

Both map to it, from different sides. Monitaur documents your models. Swept records how AI is used, by whom and with what data. The bulletin asks for both kinds of evidence.
